Bamford Edge and Derwent Reservoir
April 22, 2026Based on a recommendation from Robbie Roams No Fuss guide to the Peak District we decided to do the Bamford Edge walk. This is supposed to be a relatively easy walk along the edge of an escarpment with great views. There is car parking near the start of the walk but there are not many spaces. Fortunately we found one. The what3words for the parking is: ///wiping.paddle.tasks. Once there we set of up what was a fairly steep climb for a few hundred meters before it levelled out when we got to the edge. I recorded the walk and this can be found on Strava:
We were lucky with the weather, it was a bit windy but generally clear, and the reviews were not wrong, this is a must do walk with lovely views of the Derwent and Hope Valleys. I attach some pictures below.
Surely one of the best views in the Peaks if not England:
From a bit further along the track

In general the walking was very easy and the track pretty smooth, the worst section was probably the bit below, which is coming up from the car park.

This was near to the start

After getting back from Banford Edge we went to the Fairholmes car park next to Derwent Reservoir. After a cup of coffee we then walked to the famous Derwent Dam, the one used by the Dam Busters for practice. This was also a lovely walk with just a bit of a climb to get to the top of the dam. Some pictures below:
The way the dam is designed to let the water cascade over the entire width makes it look very attractive.
