Grassington to Parceval Hall Gardens
May 05, 2026This was an amazing ride around the beautiful Wharfdale valley in the Yorkshire Dales. The route can be found on Komoot below:
We started from the Caravan and Motorhome club Wharfdale campsite just outside Grassington and rode through the delightful Hebden
past the iconic Hebden Suspension Bridge and along the Wharf valley with some amazing scenery, including a view of the lovely Burnsall village (though which we will return later):

We continued through Lower Hartlington to the delightful AppleTreeWick before turning towards Parcevall Hall Gardens. The Gardens are privately owned and to go around them you need to pay or be a member of Historic Houses (although you can use the cafe without having to pay for entry). The cafe seems to be quite famous for its Brownies, though as we are not that keen on Brownies we didn't taste them ourselves.
The gardens themselves are lovely, very tranquil and a lovely relaxing place to walk around. We wandered about for probably an hour and thoroughly enjoyed it before we treated ourselves to coffee and millionaires shortbread. Some pictures from the gardens are below.

After our refreshments we carried on along the dale following the river until we reached Barden, when we crossed onto the other side (which involved a very steep ascent up from the valley floor). We cycled past Baden tower
and would have liked to call in but wasn't sure if it was free or private. Hopefully another time. We then followed the river back to Burnsell. There was a very fast and enjoyable descent into Burnsell involving gradients of up to 20% at some points. Burnsell is a lovely village with old world pubs and very nice ice cream shop, which we thought it would be rude not to frequent.
After the very tasty ice cream we continued the ride abck to the start. We should have taken a short detour on the way back to visit the Linton Falls but unfortunately missed that and so walked down from the village on another day. They are well worth a visit.
Linton Falls
Overall this was a thoroughly enjoyable ride, hilly but with amazing scenery. Next time I would probably extend it a bit further to Bolton Abbey but Malvenia was recovering from an ankle injury and we didn't want to overdo it.
