Ribblehead Viaduct Walk

April 22, 2026

Whist staying at Hawes Caravan and Motorhome club site we decided to pay a visit to the Ribblehead Viaduct, having seen it on many guidebooks and vlogs. Fortunately being out of season it was very easy to park on the side of the road for free and there were good paths to take you to the viaduct. From a distance it is an impressive task but its only when you get up close that you realise quite what a feat of engineering it is. We found out that whist it was completed in 1874 (by a workforce of 2300 men, and at a cost of over 100 deaths) it had become in need of extensive restoration, which was completed in 1994.

We had not intended to go on a walk but whilst there followed a path to see the top of the viaduct and ended up on the three peaks train heading to Wernside, the highest peak in Yorkshire. We were glad we did as the scenery was amazing, especially the beautiful lower force waterfall. We didn't make it all the way to the top as Malvania is recovering from an ankle sprain and we didn't want to over stress it. Nevertheless it was a challenging and very enjoyable walk. Hopefully we can return another day to complete the climb. The strava route is below, I didn't start it from the beginning as we hadn't intended it to be a walk.

Some pictures of the viaduct and from the walk are below

Overall the walk was relatively easy and not too steep, so suitable for most people.

This is surely one of the best views in the Dales to finish with.
